THE Consumer Council of Zimbabwe (CCZ) has issued a public warning regarding a potentially dangerous phone charger, following an international recall sparked by multiple safety complaints.
The product in question — the Kessley Portable 5000mAh MagSafe Wireless Phone Charger, model number E33A — has been flagged by the COMESA Competition Commission after reports emerged of serious malfunctions.
According to global safety watchdogs, particularly the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the charger’s lithium-ion battery poses a significant fire risk.
The battery reportedly overheated, expanded or caught fire in at least 51 instances while users were charging their phones.
Six of those cases resulted in minor burn injuries.
In a statement, Consumer Council of Zimbabwe corporate affairs director Mr Phillimon Chereni said: “The Consumer Council of Zimbabwe wishes to advise the general public of a notice issued by the COMESA Competition Commission concerning the Kessley model E33A charger. According to the CPSC, the lithium-ion battery in the recalled power banks can overheat and ignite, causing fire and burn hazards.”
Mr Chereni said the product, manufactured in China and imported into the United States, was being sold primarily through online platforms — a key concern for Zimbabwean consumers who frequently purchase gadgets via e-commerce.
“Kessley has already effected a voluntary recall after receiving dozens of complaints, including six minor burn injuries,” he said.
“We urge Zimbabwean consumers who may have purchased this product online to stop using it immediately.”
CCZ is working closely with regional partners and consumer protection agencies to monitor imported electronics and prevent such hazardous products from entering local markets.
Consumers have been advised to check their devices and report any safety concerns to the CCZ.
