Zanu PF Secretary for War Veterans Affairs in the Politburo, Cde Douglas Mahiya has urged war veterans to fully support the passage of Constitutional Amendment Bill No. 3 and help fulfil the wishes of the majority of Zimbabweans for President Mnangagwa to remain in office beyond 2028.
Addressing war veterans’ leaders from all seven administrative districts in Masvingo this afternoon, Cde Mahiya reminded ex‑freedom fighters to be guided by the Zanu PF resolution for President Mnangagwa to remain in office until 2030.
He told war veterans that President Mnangagwa is a constitutionalist who respects the letter and spirit of the law, hence any extension of his term of office should be underwritten by the Constitution.
The ruling party Politburo member warned some war veterans, including retired generals, against trying to act as “big brothers” over other cadres.
“There is no war veteran, whether a retired general or otherwise, who can take away the right of other war veterans. Every war veteran has a right to stand for himself and, in this case, we are bound by the wishes of the party (Zanu PF) which passed a resolution that President Mnangagwa should remain in office until 2030,” said Cde Mahiya.
He also took time to unpack key elements of Constitutional Amendment Bill No. 3, saying a referendum is not necessary for it to become law.
Speaking at the same meeting, national chair of the Veterans of the Liberation Struggle Board and Masvingo War Veterans League provincial chair, Retired Major‑General Gibson Mashingaidze said ex‑freedom fighters in Masvingo are fully behind Constitutional Amendment Bill No. 3.
He said war veterans were part of all the processes that led to Zanu PF passing a resolution to extend the President’s term of office to 2030.
At the meeting, Masvingo war veterans said they fully backed Constitutional Amendment Bill No. 3 and implored the Government to continue prioritising their welfare.
