THE Ministry of Mines and Mining Development has urged miners in waterways or low-lying areas to temporarily halt operations until Cyclone Freddy passes.
In a statement, the Ministry’s chief engineer, Michael Munodawafa, said Cyclone Freddy will come with a lot of heavy rains, causing flooding.
“My fellow Zimbabweans, especially our small-scale miners and relatives, I’m sure we have all heard about the cyclone coming to Zimbabwe in the next few days.
“The heavy rains and flooding will also result in instability in the ground due to oversaturation which will result in the ground collapsing and burying our miners alive,” he said.
He urged miners to take the advice seriously as the nation does not want to lose any miner during this period.
“Let’s value our lives more than the gold or any other mineral we are mining.
“A single loss of life is a loss to the family, the village, the country, and all of us.
“Let’s retreat briefly until the cyclone passes.”
