Cellphone thief jailed 5 months, ordered to restitute complainants

A 21-year-old Bulawayo man has been sentenced to five months in prison for stealing two cellphones on separate occasions.

Wisdom Ncube of Pumula East suburb was convicted of two counts of theft by Western Commonage Magistrate Mr Jeconia Prince Ncube.

He was initially sentenced to four months in prison on count one and six months in prison on count two.

Of the 10 months sentence, two months were suspended for three years on condition of good behaviour.

A further three months were suspended on condition that he restitutes US$60 to the complainant in count one and US$100 to the complainant in count two.

Both restitution amounts are payable before July 24. The remaining five months are effective.

Prosecutor, Mr Tafara Dzimbanhete told the court that on April 11, 2026, at around 4 AM, the accused person entered Limukani Sibanda’s place of residence and stole an Itel A16 cellphone before fleeing.

The total value stolen in count one is US$60, and nothing was recovered, said Mr Dzimbanhete.

The court heard that on May 14, 2026, at around 8.30PM at Pumula Old Shops, the accused person asked Mayibongwe Moyo (17) to lend him his Samsung M13 cellphone so that he could make a phone call.

The complainant handed him the cellphone, but the accused person quickly disappeared with it.

The total value stolen in count two is US$100, and nothing was recovered, said Mr Dzimbanhete.

A police report was made, leading to the arrest of the accused person, added Mr Dzimbanhete.
