A SIMPLE night trip turned into a horror ride straight out of a movie when two Epworth teens and their mystery sidekick robbed a taxi driver near Zinyengerere Cemetery.
Tafadzwa Chiseva Dumbuka (18) and Nyasha Masikati (19) were jailed after a Harare court found them guilty of violently robbing taxi driver Michael Nyamudo (37) on 13 April.
The driver picked up the trio at Munyuki Business Centre for a trip to Rueben Business Centre. But as the car cruised past the cemetery, the trap was sprung.
The third man grabbed Nyamudo by the neck and smashed a beer bottle on him while Dumbuka and Masikati dragged him to the back seat. They ransacked him, pocketing US$50, IDs, a wallet and his Samsung A03 Core.
The thugs hurled the taxi driver out of the moving Toyota Spade and sped off. The car was later found dumped in Warren Park, stripped of its battery, radio, amplifier, speakers and keys.
Property worth US$7 379 was stolen, with police managing to claw back US$7 249. Detectives cracked the case by tracing the stolen cellphone to Masikati, who quickly sold out his partner. Dumbuka was later flushed out of Mambeva Village in Gutu, where he had gone to hide.
The pair were each slapped with four-year terms, but two years were suspended, leaving them to stew behind bars for two years apiece.
The National Prosecuting Authority warned: “Be cautious when offering late-night transport. Report suspicious movements to your nearest police station.”
