THE second edition of the CG Msipa Charity football tournament that was scheduled to kick off today in Gweru and Zvishavane has been moved to the first weekend of March. The former Midlands Governor, founder of CG Msipa Scholarship Trust, Cephas George Msipa yesterday told journalists that the postponement was due to the wet conditions prevailing in the Midlands Province. He said Mandava Stadium in Zvishavane and Ascot Stadium in Gweru, where the semi-finals of the tourney were scheduled to be held were waterlogged and could not host matches.
“Because of the weather conditions we found it necessary to postpone the soccer tournament. The grounds are waterlogged and we found out that it is not possible to successfully stage our tournament. We have since communicated this to all the teams, Zifa and PSL,” said Msipa.
Msipa said everything about the tourney remains unchanged save for the shifts in the dates.
Four teams, Highlanders, Chapungu, FC Platinum and Shabanie Mine are scheduled to take part in the tourney, up from two last year.
FC Platinum and Shabanie Mine took part in the inaugural edition, and the former won 2-0.
Highlanders are set to play Chapungu at Ascot Stadium in the first semi-final, which will be a Saturday while Shabanie Mine will lock horns with FC Platinum in the second semi- final. Winners of the two matches will meet in the final at Mandava stadium the following day. The CG Msipa Trust this year aims to raise about $300, 000.
