Challenges will pass, says legislator

The challenges Zimbabwe is going through will soon pass and Zimbabweans have every reason to celebrate and cherish the country’s Independence which brought democracy, Norton legislator Mr Temba Mliswa has said.

Speaking on the sidelines of an Independence Gala held recently at the Norton Koshen Grounds, Mr Mliswa said economic challenges were part of every nation’s development.

“It is important, especially for the young generation, to understand where we came from as a nation.

“The relevance of the Independence celebrations can never be understood unless you bring in music that the young generation can relate to, which unites them and talks to them,” he said.

Mr Mliswa said all Zimbabweans were products of the liberation struggle, hence everyone should play their part in uplifting the country.

He further called for more to be done to stamp out corruption, while fostering unity among Zimbabweans in line with President Mnangagwa’s re-engagement drive.

The Independence Gala drew thousands of people from all walks of life to Koshen Grounds where musicians such as Seh Calaz, Nutty O, gospel artiste Kudzi Nyakudya and Mbeu were performing.

“No matter how difficult things get, we cannot not forget the contribution of people like the late Tongogara, Chitepo and the living like President Mnangagwa and Vice President Chiwenga among others.

“We need to continuously educate the young people on the values of the liberation struggle so that they grow with that consciousness,” he said.

Mr Mliswa also called for self-introspection by the business sector to see if recent price hikes were justified.

“There will always be challenges in a country, but we all need to be involved, with business asking themselves if the price increases are fair to the ordinary person.

“The politicians who come up with policies and fail to implement them must also ask if it is fair on the person in the streets.

“We need to come together as Zimbabweans, the opposition, Zanu-PF and everyone else to help improve the situation.”

Norton resident Mr John Katare hailed Mr Mliswa for the gala, saying it gave people an opportunity to celebrate Independence in song and dance.

“The majority of people who came for the gala are our young people and this gives them an opportunity to enjoy while being informed of the country’s history,” he said.
