South African actress Khabonina Qubeka has lauded German-based Zimbabwean author Phillip Tinashe Gwatidzo’s novel, Changamire Dombo – The Legend, as a “generational, groundbreaking literature.”

The Shaka iLembe star shared her endorsement with her extensive Instagram following, questioning the absence of pre-colonial African history in school curricula.

Qubeka showcased an AI-enhanced promotional clip of the book, advocating for its integration into African education systems.

She said such works were important in fostering pride and identity among young Africans amidst global influences.

Gwatidzo said he was deeply honoured by the endorsement.

“It is truly an honour to have someone of Khabonina’s stature believe in and share the vision of this book.”

He said the project aims to provide African children with a source of pride and self-recognition.

Changamire Dombo has already been incorporated into Zimbabwe’s A-Level curriculum.

Gwatidzo envisions expanding the narrative across various media, including animation, series and film with the core mission of making African identity appealing to the continent’s youth.

Having sold over 4 000 copies across 25 nations, Gwatidzo is now focusing on aggressive marketing across Africa.

He is seeking support from Zimbabwe’s Ministry of Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture and appealing to Pan-Africanists to join his vision of shifting the African narrative towards pride and empowerment.

Despite challenges in securing local support, Gwatidzo views international recognition as a positive sign of momentum.

He believes his project can also stimulate Africa’s creative industries, tourism and youth employment.
