THE Bulawayo City Council has launched a clean-up campaign which will see the distribution of hundreds of litter bins across the city.
Bulawayo Mayor Clr Martin Moyo says residents must change their “waste disposal tendencies” to aid the council’s efforts to keep the city clean.
The clean-up crusade launch at Basch Street terminus, popularly known as Egodini, last Friday, was also attended by the Minister of State for Provincial Affairs in Bulawayo, Cde Eunice Nomthandazo Moyo.
Cde Moyo said she hoped the good working relationship between the Government and council would enhance development and restore the city’s former glory.
“I am quite pleased with the excellent working relationship I share with the mayor. It’s my hope that this co-operation between Government and council will help to bring development and restore Bulawayo’s status as one of the cleanest cities,” said Cde Moyo.
Clr Moyo said the council could not keep the city clean without public support.
“It’s useless to carry out such clean up campaigns without addressing the root cause of improper waste disposal tendencies by the public,” the mayor said.
“I understand that there is a general shortage of litter bins and in this regard council will be providing more litter bins at public places like this terminus. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the corporate community for donating bins that we will soon be distributing for use by residents throughout the city.”
The clean up exercise was organised by the Environmental Management Authority (EMA) and involved kombi operators, resident’s associations, the business community and members of the public.
