Have you ever heard or read about William James? Dr William James (1842-1910) was an American philosopher and psychologist. He is widely regarded as one of the founders of American psychology and is known for his contributions to the field of pragmatism. James had a significant influence on various areas of psychology, including theories of emotion, consciousness, and the study of the self.

He received his medical degree from Harvard University and initially pursued a career in medicine. However, he later shifted his focus to psychology and philosophy, ultimately becoming a professor of psychology at Harvard. James’ approach to psychology emphasised the study of the individual’s experience, focusing on the subjective aspects of human consciousness.

One of his seminal works is “The Principles of Psychology,” published in 1890, which is considered a foundational text in psychology. James also delved into a wide range of topics such as religious experiences, free will, and the nature of belief.

Dr William James made significant contributions to the fields of psychology and philosophy, emphasising the importance of individual experience and the role of personal agency in shaping one’s life. His ideas continue to be influential and are widely studied and discussed in academic and philosophical circles.

It was not easy

William James faced significant challenges and setbacks throughout his life. Despite being born into privilege, he suffered from various health issues and struggled academically. His passion for painting went unrecognised, and he faced ridicule from his father for his perceived lack of talent and laziness.

In a last attempt to salvage his future, James was admitted to Harvard Medical School, but he felt like an imposter during his studies and realized that medicine did not align with his true interests. Choosing to follow his instincts, he dropped out and embarked on an anthropological expedition to the Amazon rainforest, despite his fragile health.

Enduring grave conditions and contracting smallpox, James faced further adversity as his back spasms returned, rendering him unable to walk. Stranded alone in South America, he eventually managed to return home, only to confront disappointment from his father and the bleak reality of being unemployed and seemingly destined for failure.

However, amidst his deep depression, James made a profound decision. He conducted an experiment, committing to believing that he was entirely responsible for everything in his life for a year, regardless of external circumstances. Determined to change his circumstances, he embarked on a transformative journey.

Remarkably, William James went on to become the father of American psychology. His influential work has been acclaimed globally, and he became a renowned lecturer and professor at Harvard. He found love, married, and had children, one of whom achieved notable success as a biographer.

James later referred to his experiment as his “rebirth” and credited it with changing the course of his life. His story teaches us the profound lesson that personal improvement and growth emerge when we realise that we are individually responsible for our lives, irrespective of external challenges. He bequeathed this eternal nugget, “The greatest discovery of my generation is that human beings can alter their lives by altering their attitudes of mind.”

William James’ journey highlights the importance of resilience, following our true passions, embracing personal responsibility, harnessing the power of mindset, refusing to give up, and finding meaning and purpose in our endeavours. His life serves as an inspiration to overcome adversity, confront setbacks, and strive for personal growth and fulfilment despite the obstacles we face.
