BAKERS drawn from across the country’s provinces were recently honoured for their creativity at the inaugural Zim Cake Artists (ZCA) Awards held in Harare.
The winners were picked on the basis of outstanding art display of the cakes that were made during a baking training session organised by the ZCA company.
The best bakers walked away with hampers, cash and baking equipment.
More than 60 bakers took part in the training session, which ran under the theme “Recreating Zimbabwe’s Caking Industry”.
Mrs Kathy Mwanza, the president of ZCA, said more than 300 bakers have so far passed through the organisation’s programme.
“We are here to uplift each other as women. In ZCA, we have about 30 women who are dedicated to advising and uplifting each other,” she said.
Apart from educating each other, the women also have a revolving loan facility.
Mrs Ellina Chakawodza, a Zim Cake Artists committee member, was impressed by the entries.
“Some of the entries were well-designed and eye-catching. I encourage more women to take up baking,” Mrs Chakawodza said.
Ms Fadzai Mubvumi, a baker who travelled all the way from Zvishavane for the awards ceremony, said she learnt a lot during the training session.
“Some of the bakers are very innovative and creative. I learnt a lot from the sessions and I would be happy if such training programmes are held as frequently as possible.”
