ZANU-PF candidate for Bulawayo Ward 28 Cde Kidwell Mujuru has said chaos in the MDC Alliance is working to his advantage, after the opposition party fielded two candidates for the council seat.
Ward 28 fell vacant when the incumbent Hapson Ncube died in December last year.
In an interview, Cde Mujuru said by fielding two candidates, the opposition candidates showed that they were just power hungry and cared little about serving the interests of the people.
The MDC Alliance fielded two candidates ahead of the March 30 by-election.
Alderman Collet Ndlovu is seeking a third term in office while Ms Nomagugu Mloyi successfully filed her papers to contest the Cowdray Park seat.
Last Thursday, the MDC Alliance held a chaotic primary election which Ald Ndlovu won but party insiders said Ms Mloyi felt cheated and declined to withdraw from the race.
Cde Mujuru said he has since started a door- to-door campaign in the Ward telling residents his political message.
“We have also observed the chaos in the MDC Alliance where the opposition party fielded two candidates for the same ward. For what it takes I think that is a blessing for us as it could work in our favour. But of utmost importance it has exposed the opposition candidates for just being power hungry with no wish of serving people’s interests,” he said.
Cde Mujuru said he, however, does not want to focus on the divisions in the opposition as he wants to make amends for losing the same position during the harmonised elections last year.
Cde Mujuru in last year’s elections lost the same Ward to MDC Alliance candidate Hapson Ncube.
“This is a second chance for me to represent people in my community. Although I was born in Luveve suburb, I built my house in Cowdray Park. I know the problems that affect the residents as they affect me as well. We have problems with roads and service delivery in general. So as a member of the ruling Zanu-PF, I believe it would be easier for me to take up their matters to relevant Government departments,” he said.
“Recently I was chatting with the Minister for Provincial Affairs, umama uJudith Ncube who was saying none of the opposition councillors have approached her office to discuss issues affecting residents. Hence as a Zanu-PF member I can take up problems affecting residents easily to higher offices. We are the ruling party, no matter what people say critical decisions are made by our Government.” — @nqotshili
