Triangle . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 0VISITORS Triangle were left to rue an own goal by defender Donald Dzvinyayi that handed Chapungu victory in a dull Castle Lager Premier Soccer League encounter at Ascot yesterday.
Dzvinyayi turned the ball into his own goal in the 13th minute and this proved enough to hand the airmen maximum points.
The goal also helped Chapungu avenge having lost by a similar margin to Triangle in the reverse tie at Gibbo.
Chapungu won a free-kick on the left after Triangle goalkeeper Ronald Mudimu had handled outside the box while trying to clear a ball.
Burly forward Allen Tavarwisa flighted in a cross which Mudimu failed to intercept before deflecting off Dzvinyayi at the near post and into an empty net.
There was nothing much to write home about in the first half as both teams never really threatened creating less than five chances collectively.
Even the introduction of new acquisition Simon Maengeni whom they signed from ZPC Kariba at the start of the second half failed to increase Chapungu’s tempo.
Triangle coach David “Yogi’’ Mandigora made a double substitution midway into the second half bringing in Simba Makoni for Courage Denias and Nathan Ziwini for Kudzanai Machazana and it brought some urgency in the attack.
However, Chapungu gaffer John Nyikadzino countered that by sending on veteran Tafadzwa Mombeshora to break the attacks.
The airmen held on to win the match, their third at home this season.
Nyikadzino said it was a sweet revenge for Chapungu after losing the reverse fixture.
“I am very happy that we managed to collect maximum points considering that we created very few chances today. It was sweet revenge for us especially after we lost the reverse fixture in the dying stage of the match,” Nyikadzino said.
A disappointed Mandigora blamed the loss to a lapse in concentration by his defenders.
“I am disappointed because we were punished for a lapse in concentration.
“We need to go back to the drawing board because we are not creating chances as we have now gone for three games without scoring which is worrisome,” Mandingora said.
