CHAPUNGU coach John Nyikadzino will not make wholesale changes to his side as it acquitted itself well during the first half of the Premier Soccer League (PSL) season.
The Air Force of Zimbabwe team has already promoted Leeroy Bernard from its junior ranks and roped in Charles Mativenga, who had not been registered despite turning out for the club last season.
Bernard made his debut for the airmen in Sunday’s 0-0 game against Zvishavane-based miners FC Platinum and gave a good account of himself before making way for the experienced Xolani Ncube in the second half.
Nyikadzino however said he would look at beefing up his strikeforce before the transfer window closes at the end of this month, as he feels that department has let down his team’s campaign this season.
“I’m happy with the performance of the team so far, meaning we’ll not be bringing in many faces. Actually we’ve taken on board Mativenga, who is our player but hadn’t been registered, as well as Bernard from the juniors,” said Nyikadzino.
“We’ll make one or two signings in as far as strikers are concerned. We haven’t been getting as many goals as we would love to.”
Former Tripple B striker Charles Maengeni could be headed for Chapungu as he has been training with the club. However, Nyikadzino was non-committal saying he was only “assessing” the player and nothing concrete had been reached.
Only former Triangle forward Tinei Chitora has so far netted six goals while other Chapungu strikers have been firing blanks.
Allan Tavarwisa, who was at Shabanie Mine last season, has been operating in fits and starts while the trio of Maxwell Mavuto, Rodwell Mhlanga and the ageless Phillip Marufu have failed to come to the party so far this season.
Chapungu has scored a measly 13 goals in 15 games and conceded 11 times, leaving them with the third best defensive record in the league after log leaders Chicken Inn and Dynamos.
