Charamba boost for goal-shy gamecocks

CHICKEN Inn could soon receive a major attacking boost with speedy winger Michael Charamba expected to return to action within the next month after spending three months on the sidelines.

The former Zimbabwe Player of the Year finalist has been out of action after suffering a right knee meniscus injury early in the season, a setback that robbed the Gamecocks of one of their most dangerous attacking weapons.

However, there is light at the end of the tunnel for Chicken Inn supporters after Charamba returned to full training with the first team.

The winger was spotted training with his teammates during the club’s media morning on Tuesday and says he is delighted with the progress of his recovery.

In an interview afterwards, Charamba revealed that the injury occurred during Chicken Inn’s Match Day Two clash against Triangle United at Barbourfields Stadium.

“I was injured on Match Day Two versus Triangle at Barbourfields,” said Charamba.

“I had a meniscus tear on my right knee. At least now I have healed. I thank God.”

The pacey attacker said he is now focused on regaining full match fitness and hopes to be back in competitive action in the coming weeks.

“I am back at training. In the coming weeks I will be back on the field. By the Grace of God I will be back soon,” he said.

His return could not come at a better time for Chicken Inn.

The Gamecocks have struggled for goals this season and have often lacked a cutting edge in the final third. Charamba’s pace, creativity and direct running have been sorely missed, with the winger capable of influencing matches both as a starter and as an impact substitute.

His comeback is expected to give Coach Tonderai Ndiraya more attacking options as the Bulawayo side looks to improve its fortunes during the second half of the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League season.

Charamba previously formed a productive partnership with Brian Muza during his days at Ngezi Platinum Stars, with the duo proving difficult for defenders to contain.

Chicken Inn fans will be hoping the winger can quickly rediscover that form and provide the spark needed to improve the club’s goal scoring record.
