Queensdale Spar gives a donation to Shungu Dzevana through its Community Benefit Scheme

As part of its corporate social responsibility, Queensdale Spar, through Spar’s Community Benefits Scheme, donated groceries worth over $2 000 to Shungu Dzevana, an orphanage run by Catholic nun, Sister Mercy Mutyambizi, in Hatfield.

Queensdale Spar started trading on April 1 this year with Mr Daniel Tinarwo as its general manager and has acknowledged the importance of giving back to the community.

Shungu Dzevana was identified as the main benefactor in the Community Benefits Scheme. The store raises funds by working hand-in-hand with people in the community.

The store has a Community Benefits Box which is near the exit, customers are encouraged to donate cash in any denomination. At the end of each quarter, the store matches the funds raised and this is disbursed to Shungu Dzevana as groceries.

“The store has been trading for a little over three months but we felt the need to make this donation to Shungu Dzevana not only as part of our corporate social responsibility but mainly because Sister Mercy is doing a marvellous job taking in abandoned children from those who are only a few hours old to toddlers and teens,” said Mr Tinarwo.

“We hope that this donation will help improve the food situation for the children at this home and we promise that Queensdale Spar will continue assisting as and when we can.”

Sister Mercy has also started a market gardening project and is rearing egg layers.

“Thank you Spar for this generous donation, we are grateful that even in these tough times, you still recognise the importance of giving and we are so lucky to be the beneficiaries of this generosity,” remarked Sister Mercy. “Even though we are the benefactors today, I will ensure that every time I enter into a Spar store I will look for the Community Benefits Box at the exit and make my donation no matter how little it is because that scheme has made it possible for us to be recipients of this big donation.”

Spar’s Community Benefits Scheme is partnering with its communities to help change the lives of those in need.
