At the heart of ‘charity begins at home’, lies the fundamental idea that one’s family is the nucleus of their existence.
Before students set foot on the campus, they must ensure the well-being of their family members.
Despite this notion facing different proponents, those against and those for, there is always a lot to take home from the adage.
This week, I will take it in the way that students should adopt behaviours that are inclined to where they are coming from.
Every child has the potential to be good, to do well in their academic journey, and to develop spiritual qualities in a good environment.
Family set-up matters most in one’s upbringing.
But if we see students going astray we can conclusively relate their mischief to where they are coming from.
The issue is subjective but it is where they are coming from that determines their characters.
As parents, train your children in the way you want them to grow, and they will not depart from it.
Many people or students think characters are made at college but that is not the case, each individual takes their characters to college.
There is a thought that students will change after going to college, something which I beg to differ with.
Like always, I write what I see and I have been observing that some parents think their children will be good once they go to college.
Sadly, there have been many disappointments from some students who have displayed different behaviour from what they were taught growing up.
I once wrote that, sometimes, students are the authors of their failure while also imploring some parents and guardians to guide their children.
Going to college takes a lot and it should be a priority to also be disciplined, each student must remember where they are coming from, the good they have been taught. Remember when you shine, you are shining for the whole clan.
When you mess up, you are messing up for the whole clan.
This principle of charity begins at home aligns with the understanding that family obligations take precedence over broader social or charitable endeavours.
The prioritisation is not limited to the family alone, it extends progressively to relations, friends and the community at large.
The adage that charity begins at home resonates across various facets of life, emphasising the profound principle that an individual’s foremost duty is to extend support and kindness to their own family members.
This axiom asserts that any altruistic endeavour, to be truly meaningful, should commence within the immediate environment, the familial realm.
As parents and lecturers, it is their privilege and sacred responsibility to educate the children intellectually and spiritually. It is also the support that they give through life’s experiences and help them to turn the tests in life into victories.
Students are the custodians of tomorrow and there is a need to prepare them adequately for the world they will inherit.
And most importantly, the atmosphere and conditions created at home have an impact on the material and spiritual welfare and advancement of the students.
Proper guidance is of most importance. It is the care they get at home that grooms them and it is the strongest foundation for their future. University provides knowledge but it will not change the background.
At some point I wrote, as you go to college don’t be a foolish student, in this, I was referring to some students who end up going astray due to recklessness. But everything begins at home.
Without a doubt, the transformation of the university is very important but most of the things are done at home.
If everything is messed up at home, there is no way that the child will be the best, when where they are coming from is not well established.
Charity begins at home and this is where the heart is. Unfortunately, not everyone can live at home forever as most of the students spend most of their time away from home. Some will be in other countries while some will be at boarding and that alone makes them away from home.
Many times, we have seen that most children seem to change their behaviours when they start going to college.
My question is, does it mean the university environment changes students’ characters? And others do not change after going to college but the best way to have good children is to collaborate from home to college. Parents, children themselves, and lecturers help bring good character out of the students. The foundation of good behaviours is home.
Allowing students to take responsibility and encouraging them in their efforts, will help them to become responsible and confident, both very important virtues the students need to develop. It should be understood that it’s important to lead a more satisfying life while at college. There is a need to understand that what lecturers inculcate is what the parents teach their children.
Besides, home must shower the children and family with an abundance of love and fulfil all their essential needs, which can help them be the best of their clans.
Charity begins at home and encapsulates a timeless principle that reverberates across diverse spheres of life.
Whether guiding individual conduct, influencing social reform, or shaping international relations, this principle underscores the importance of prioritising one’s environment.
By recognising the centrality of the family, the principle promotes a holistic approach to benevolence, emphasising the significance of leading by example and ensuring authenticity.
