Paramedics were called to the home of Charlie Sheen on Monday night after they were told the star was suffering from a case of extreme food poisoning.

The 49-year-old, or one of his assistants, are said to have made the phone call around 11pm from his house in Los Angeles. He was then taken to a local emergency room for a check-up, where medical professionals hydrated him before sending the actor home within 90 minutes of being checked in, Mail Online can confirm.

The actor’s Press agent Jeff Ballard told Mail Online that Sheen had suffered a ‘‘severe case of food poisoning’’.

Ballard also stated that the cause of the ailment ‘‘was clams, bad clams’’ after a seafood pasta dish was delivered to his home.

‘‘Just to be on the safe side, he went to the hospital,’’ Sheen’s rep explained. ‘‘They checked him out, hydrated him and sent him on his way. He was back home in bed 90 minutes later.’’

However, according to TMZ, instead of contacting medical professionals directly, the fire department was approached to assist with the matter. Only phone calls to 911 are recorded automatically.

The incident comes in the wake of the star sending an abusive tweet to his ex-wife Denise Richards just days previously.

According to Radar Online, Charlie tweeted and quickly deleted the message over the weekend.

It said: ‘‘This rules, the name Denise Richards as an anagram or jumbled means; ‘Charred Insides,’ purr-fect,’’

He followed it with an emoticon of a toilet.

It is thought the actor is upset Denise (43) is moving out of the Mullholland Estate where he is currently living, and taking the couples two daughters Sam, 10, and Lola, nine, with her.

She is said to be planning the move as they are moving schools to a different area.

A real estate source confirmed to Radar: “Denise is now looking for a house in Pacific Palisades, Santa Monica, or Malibu because the girls will be going to a new school in that area in the fall.’’

As well as facing the prospect of his daughters moving from their home nearby, Charlie has also had to deal with losing his role on Anger Management

The show, which was a TV adaptation of the Jack Nicholson movie of the same name, was axed in December 2014.

It ran for two seasons which were made up of 100 episodes.

He was given the role after being fired from his hit sitcom “Two And A Half Men” in 2011 which as a result of studio executives deciding he could no longer work on the show while dealing with his drink and drug problems.

An attorney for Warner Bros Television, which made the show, revealed in a letter to the actor’s lawyer they wanted him to urgently seek help saying: ‘‘Get your client the sustained, rigorous and effective treatment he so urgently needs.

‘‘It is clear that (Charlie) has no intention of agreeing to the intensive evaluation and treatment that his condition requires. It is also clear he does not believe he has a problem and that he will continue to conduct himself in a destructive manner.’’

In the wake of his firing, the actor’s behaviour continued to be erratic.

In an interview with Katie Couric, in 2013, Charlie blamed some of it on “too much testosterone cream” which metabolised into a steroid.

His father Martin (74), who starred in “Anger Management” with him, appeared to confirm this in a recent interview with the Radio Times Magazine in May.

He said: ‘‘Only those of us that knew him understood what was going on.

“I’m talking about steroids, at that time. He was in a very desperate situation. And he was doing what he felt would get him out of it — going public. And it was very painful. No less painful for him.’’

However, he continued it was very painful to see his son go through the very public meltdown:

‘‘What he was going through at that time, we were powerless to do much. Except to pray for him and lift him up.

‘‘You try to be as present as possible. But you have to be aware of the circumstances.

‘‘You have to be aware of many things that the public is not aware of. And you’re right: this is a very lonely man. In a very desperate situation.’’ —bangshowbiz
