Charumbira hails parliamentary diplomacy George Maponga

PAN African Parliament (PAP) president Chief Fortune Charumbira has underscored the important role that parliamentary diplomacy can play in helping usher in a new era of socio-economic transformation and prosperity in the Global South.

Speaking in Rabat, Morocco, at the official opening of the South-South Parliamentary Dialogue Forum today, the PAP president highlighted a plethora of challenges blighting the global south and in need of urgent cure.

Chief Charumbira noted the important role that parliaments play as direct representatives of the people to engender a new epoch for the global south and steer it toward sustainable development.

He lamented an array of challenges impeding development in the global south, such as food insecurity and hunger, resurgence of conflicts and unconstitutional change of governments.

The PAP president also decried the expansion of terrorism and violent extremism, energy insecurity and the hanging ghost of Covid-19 aftershocks that continued to plague the global south.

National, regional and intercontinental parliaments, said Chief Charumbira, should be the launchpad of a new sustained drive to cure the global south of its challenges.

He said PAP, as an arm of the African Union, should be at the forefront of driving change that resonates with the aspirations of the majority of people.

Vices such as corruption reflected badly on the oversight role of parliaments, with Chief Charumbira noting that people in the global south yearned for free trade, integrated economies and seamless borders that improve ease of doing business.
