WHILE he has made his name largely as a wise-cracking comedian who is particularly adept at satire, Zimbabwean funnyman, Munya Chawawa has given a glimpse of his wider repertoire as an actor by featuring in high-profile Netflix series The Sandman as a fear-inducing demon.
Chawawa features on the hit series as Choronzon, a creature that delights in confrontation with the series’ main protagonist, Morpheus. Choronzon is an anthropomorphic demon with pink skin and two mouths who goes head-to-head with Morpheus during his quest in the Netflix adaptation show of the DC comic book with the same title by Neil Gaiman.
The role continues Chawawa’s ascent in Hollywood, despite the fact that his initial claim to fame came from his expert parody of British politicians. Although he has collaborated with Netflix in other capacities, The Sandman marks the first time that Chawawa has got screen time on the streaming service.
Last month, Chawawa made his big screen debut in Hollywood, getting a role in the animated movie, the DC League of Super Pets, alongside The Rock and Kevin Hart.
Chawawa’s stocks have risen over the last two years, with his success coinciding with Covid-19 induced lockdowns around the world.
Earlier this year, Chawawa was voted Best Breakthrough Performer at the first British National Comedy Awards for Stand Up to Cancer while only this week the Royal Television Society Programme Awards gave a thumbs up to his show, Race Around Britain, giving him an award in the presenter category.
Born in Derby in the UK, Chawawa spent his childhood in Harare before his family once again moved to Framingham Pigot, a village in Norfolk. Given all this, he has never discarded his Zimbabwean roots and believes it had a bearing on his craft.
