CHECHECHE Primary School girls last week did Manicaland proud after beating Harare 2-0 to be crowned the National Association of Primary School Heads (NAPH) champions.
The victory was sweet for the team as they stunned Harare in their own backyard.
A week earlier, the Checheche girls walloped Mutare 2-0 to be Manicaland representatives in the national finals.
NAPH has composite teams up to the national level. A team may win from the cluster to the district level, but at each stage of the competition, the team is allowed to beef up its ranks.
Thus, by the time Checheche reached the national finals, the coach remained with the same stars identified along the way.
The coach, Ishmael Kumbayira, was elated and said through hard work, he was able to see his charges making it.
He singled out the three girls chosen to represent Zimbabwe at the games in Lesotho later this year.
“I am very happy about the success of the team. However, it is through teamwork that we reached this milestone. Of special mention are Miriam Gwenzi (the captain), Angeline Mapfumo and Munashe Macheza. We prepared thoroughly for this tournament,” he said.
Checheche Primary School deputy head, Ethel Mushayi said it was through teamwork that they reached those dizzy heights as a school.
She said: “We believe in teamwork at this school. We believe the mantra ‘no one must be left behind’ is apt in honing the skills of our learners in sports.’’
Parents have been crucial in helping the school. This is evident from the words of the School Development Committee chair, Tetererai Chingwinire.
He said as parents they would do whatever it takes to motivate teachers and learners to excel in sports.
“We are duty bound to help every learner participate in sports. We have affiliated up to national level,’’ he said.
For their efforts, Checheche were presented with a floating trophy.
Some supporters used their own money to give that morale support to the players.
