“Mummy I can not see my left school shoe”, “I can’t find my mathematical set,” are some of the familiar statements that make the adrenaline of parents pump fast in these last moments of holiday. The solution to back to school era lies in a little piece of paper called a check list with required items to be used or addressed.More often than not, we bank on our sharp memory not to forget the essentials.
But the inevitable always happens.
We always miss something crucial.
Surprisingly teens of nowadays forget to prepare for the next term on time
A Chemhanza High student Grace Mushanga said: “I use a checklist thanks to my teacher who always states that. I always create my checklist the very day schools are closed.
“That is were I scribble all my requirements so that I do not forget anything important when doing the last minute rush.
“The list can be divided between responsibilities to be fulfilled by my parents and those I have to fulfil.”
Parents also need to categorise their back-to-school checklist in time so that they don’t forget essentials.
One parent noted: ”A good example is to write different checklists for stationery, homework, uniforms, toiletries, electronics, and food stuffs.
“Uniforms also need inspection on size and quality of the slacks, shirts, stockings, jerseys, with a special attention to the little things like buttons and zips.
“It embarrasses students a lot to realise they carried a heavy trunk without their panties and pads. Change of season also means change of clothes.
“Please do not buy uniforms without first fitting the clothes.
“Do not buy using assumptions based on previous sizes. In terms of homework during the holiday you need to create a homework station so that all papers will be on one place.”
Writing classes sitting for final exams like Grade 7, Ordinary and Advanced levels need to be thoroughly equipped with exam aids like revision papers, enough pens, new rulers, etc. By now they should know their areas of weaknesses which need more attention.
“My back to school is really a blessed one as I managed to source digital learning aids in form of educational DVDs which can help me solve challenges in mathematics, science and geography,” said Makanaka Chuma, an ordinary level student from Oasis College in Harare.
He said visuals help in learning.
With the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education-inspired Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) programme in our midst, some students will be surprised to see changed learning environments with their classrooms equipped televisions sets, laptops, projectors and DVD players as e-learning takes a full throttle.
“ Already there are reports that the new curriculum is being sampled in selected schools for final implementation in 2017.
