Zimbabwe………………………………….. 7
Canada………………………………………. (14) 31
ZIMBABWE failed to get past the first hurdle of the Rugby World Cup Sevens as they went down 7-31 to Canada in their Pre-round of 16 clash at Cape Town Stadium on Friday.
The Cheetahs got off to a bright start when Godfrey Magaramombe planted down a try in the first minutes of the game to give Zimbabwe an early 7-0 lead after Ryan Musumhi’s conversion.
However, a series of schoolboy blunders and unforced errors saw Canada bounce back and take control of the game.
The North Americans got their tries from Alex Russel and Anton Ngongo, both converted by Brock Webster to give themselves a 14-7 lead at the break.
Afterward, tries from Jake Thiel, Ciaran Breen and Russel’s second sealed the game for the Canadians.
Webster finished with eight points, as he converted four of Canada’s five tries.
The defeat means Zimbabwe have been relegated to the less-fancied Bowls, while Canada proceed to the round-of-16 where they will meet France.
The Cheetahs will be in action again on Saturday when they meet Hong Kong in the Bowls’ quarterfinals.
Hong Kong seemingly had a torrid first day as they went down 7-19 to Uruguay.
