The Cheetahs outscored the Sharks by four tries to two to secure their first opening round victory since 2007. The heavily favoured Sharks finished strongly but had a late try disallowed for a knock on which would have earned them a draw.
The Sharks lost skipper Bismarck du Plessis due to injury before the start of the match, with fly-half Pat Lambie taking over the captaincy duties.
