Zimbabwe left the country yesterday afternoon and have been drawn in Pool D of the competition where they will also take on Asians Samurai, and Tanzania. Led by assistant coach Gilbert
Nyamutsamba, the Cheetahs travelled with their second string side – The Goshawks – for the competition, having last played in Zambia at the Castle Sevens. The Zimbabwe developmental side have been drawn in a tough Pool C where they are expected to challenge Samoa, Spain and Belmont Shore. Hosts Kenya were yesterday placed in Pool A as the tournament’s top seed where they will take on the challenge of Uganda, Rwanda and Grenoble in the first round of matches.
However, the hosts will not be fielding their second string side – Shujaa – as most of their players are in camp with the XVs side who are preparing for the Confederation of Africa Cup Group A tournament that also starts on Monday.
Their best run was getting into the semi-final of the competition a few years ago before losing to the Emerging Boks. The Cheetahs will be using this event as their final major preparatory show for the IRB World Sevens circuit.
