“Like every other council in the country and organisations Chegutu has not been spared from the liquidity crunch that has gripped the country and we have fallen behind in paying our workers salaries,” he said.
He said council was expecting a response from the bank this week.
Asked how they managed to keep workers at work without pay unlike other municipalities in the country, Mr Kamba said strikes were a result of councils not being open and transparent about their finances causing suspicion. The finance director said council was collecting about 45 percent of what it is owed by residents and other ratepayers. “We are aware that most of our people are not servicing their bills because of the economic situation prevailing in the country in general and in Chegutu in particular where most of the industries have closed,” he said.
Chegutu is owed nearly US$5 million by residents and other stakeholders and initiatives to recover the money through a debt clearance promotion have yielded about US$1 million.
In a bid to diversify revenue flows, the municipality has embarked on a number of projects, including poultry production and brick moulding.
“We have embarked on a partnership with an individual at our farm and very soon we will start to realise the fruits of that union,” he said.
