Northern Region Division One League outfit, Chegutu Pirates Annual General Meeting which was scheduled for last Saturday failed to take off after unruly behaviour by some of the club’s supporters coupled with no takers for the executive posts which are up for grabs.
The meeting which was supposed to kick off in the morning at Chegutu Municipal Welfare Centre only started four hours later after club’s chairman and ZRP details had arrived.
Less than 20 of the club’s supporters had paid the $10 the membership fee by Saturday making then eligible to attend and vote during the AGM.
However, more than 30 unregistered Chegutu Pirates fans turned up for the meeting, forcing their entry into the meeting demanding that they have a right to vote since Pirates was their favourite team.
While the club’s chairman, Admire Botso, was spelling out requirements for one to be eligible to attend and vote during the AGM, some unruly fans disturbed him, saying that he had no right to address the meeting since his term of office had come to an end on December 31.
Hell broke loose after Botso revealed that Tapiwa Ngara, former vice-chairman and Ronald Makaza were the only two contestants who had paid to contest for the chairmanship and secretary posts.
Zimbabwe Republic Police details who had been invited to maintain order failed to control the unruly fans forcing the club’s chairman to call off the meeting and scheduling it for next Saturday at the same venue.
Botso said he had called off the meeting due to a number of factors, citing unruly fans behaviour and apathy.
“I’ve called off the todays AGM to next Saturday, the main reasons are that it had failed to meet some constitution clauses, we had only two contestants, who had paid to contest for the posts which were going to be vacant after my executive had been dissolved.
“There are eight executive posts on offer and only two had attracted interest. Also, our support base had failed to pay their membership fee for them to be eligible to attend and vote during the AGM but above all the unruly behaviour by the fans disturbed the AGM. We cannot run our club’s affairs in such a manner, the AGM is the foundation of our club but if our fans exhibit such behaviour then it a recipe for disaster.”
Chegutu Municipality Community Services, Superintendent Kenese Salima, who was the presiding officer, said that the Chegutu Pirates AGM had a false start and did not meet all the requirements.
“Today’s purported Chegutu Pirates AGM failed according to the club’s constitution and did not meet all the requirements for an elective general meeting. The AGM was postponed to next Saturday and I cannot say that the two contestants, who had paid to contest have been elected unopposed.
“I did not dissolve the current executive; they’ll only be dissolved after they have presented the 2024-2025 chairman and treasure reports and the bonafide Pirates supporters have adopted them. I am going to impress it to my principals during my report that the proper Pirates AGM is slated for the next Saturday,” he said.
The club has not assembled a technical team after Moses Chunga left at the end of the last season.
