Chegutu’s ‘Fast & Furious’ hopeful handed four-year jail sentence

You can’t make this up!

IF there were awards for the dumbest criminal getaway of the year, Moses Lloyd Hungwe (35) of Chegutu would be polishing his trophy right now – from inside a prison cell.

This fella decided to audition for “Fast and Furious: Chegutu Drift” when he spotted a woman’s car idling at a traffic light on the Chegutu-Harare road.

It was an ordinary afternoon — until Hungwe appeared out of nowhere, like an extra who had missed his cue.

Before the unsuspecting motorist could even blink, Hungwe yanked open the passenger door and leapt into the car.

Shocked and terrified, the woman jumped out — and the mampara threw himself behind the wheel.

He then zoomed off, tyres screeching, heart pounding and ego inflated.

Witnesses said the bizarre scene looked like something straight out of a poorly written action movie — except this one had no getaway plan and no common sense.

Hungwe sped away in the car hoping to make a quick escape.

But in classic mampara fashion, his joyride was short-lived.

Police, alerted by the frantic victim, quickly launched a manhunt.

Officers from the Zimbabwe Republic Police in Chegutu intercepted the stolen car near Bryden Country School, a few kilometres away.

Hungwe was cornered before he could even decide where to go next.

When he appeared before the court in Chegutu, the magistrate heard how Hungwe’s impulsive stunt had not only terrified the victim but also disrupted traffic as startled motorists watched the drama unfold.

The court found him guilty of theft of a motor vehicle and sentenced him to five years in prison, with one year suspended for good behaviour — meaning an effective four years behind bars to reflect on his failed career in carjacking.

Perhaps the real lesson here is this: If you want to star in a high-speed chase, at least make sure it is on the big screen — not on the evening crime docket.
