Chelsea insist on buying Rooney

would be prepared to splash out over £30million for Rooney and match his £250 000-a-week United salary. It is believed Abramovich is determined not to be outbid by Paris Saint-Germain for Rooney and will blow any interest from Arsenal out of the water.

New United manager David Moyes has made Rooney’s future his top priority and will soon speak to the 27-year-old at Old Trafford.

Those talks may well decide whether or not Abramovich gets his man. Jose Mourinho is expected to return to the Blues for a second spell as manager and the Portuguese is a big fan of Rooney.

A source told Sunday Mirror Sport: “Chelsea want to make sure that if Wayne leaves United, there is only one place he will go.

“They are prepared to spend, big, big money on Rooney and they have told United that.

“Mourinho would love to manage Rooney. He thinks he can get him back to his best and use him in a similar way to how Didier Drogba operated for Chelsea.”

Mourinho’s advisers are this week due to hold talks with Real Madrid president Florentino Perez.

They want to find a compromise over who will pay the compensation fee to allow Mourinho to return to Chelsea.

It is understood Mourinho may be willing to pay part of the £17m compensation to free himself.

Meanwhile, Mourinho has been told Cristiano Ronaldo will not be joining him at Chelsea.

Elsewhere, Radamel Falcao will become Manchester City’s first signing of the Manuel Pellegrini era after the Etihad club greed a British record transfer fee for the Atletico Madrid striker, writes the Sunday People.

City have met the £54million buy-out clause in the Colombian’s Atletico contract — to snatch him away from incoming Chelsea boss Mourinho.

Falcao, has long been one of hottest properties in world football and his signing by City will be a boost for the profile of the Premier League.

The deal is also a major coup for Pellegrini, with 27-year-old Falcao keen to work for the Chilean, who is expected to sign a two-year deal at City within a fortnight.

Mourinho and Falcao share an agent, Jorge Mendes, and the Special One was hoping Falcao would join him at Chelsea.

But the player is said to prefer City rather than go head-to-head with Fernando Torres, the favourite of owner Roman Abramovich, at Stamford Bridge. His transfer fee will surpass the £50m Chelsea paid Liverpool for Torres in 2011. Falcao’s imminent arrival, on a deal worth more than £200 000 per week, means Carlos Tevez will be allowed to leave City and the Argentine has offers on the table from wealthy French clubs Paris Saint-Germain and Monaco.

Falcao will now link up at the Etihad with Sergio Aguero, the man he replaced at Atletico in 2011. — The Mirror.
