Speaking after Chelsea beat Benfica 2-1 in the Europa League Final in Amsterdam, Benitez hinted that the windfall will benefit incoming Jose Mourinho. Benitez told Spanish radio Onda Cero: ‘‘What I am sure about is that next season Chelsea will be much better because they will spend £100m and they will sign three or four players
‘‘The foundation is already there. The future is bright for them. I don’t know who the next coach will be, I am not the one who should say (who it will be) even though everyone speculates the same person.’’
Frank Lampard has signed a new one-year deal with Chelsea, ending speculation that the midfielder will leave Stamford Bridge this summer.
The midfielder, who became the club’s record goal-scorer last weekend, captained the Blues to Europa League glory as Branislav Ivanovic headed a late winner against Benfica in Amsterdam on Wednesday night.
Lampard’s new contract was announced by Chelsea in a move that is likely to see him team up once again with incoming manager Mourinho.
Ron Gourlay, Chelsea FC Chief Executive, said: ‘‘Frank has been an important player for Chelsea Football Club for a long time and has played a significant part in the club’s success. We have been talking to him since the end of last year and our discussions have been entirely positive.” — Mailonline.
