MATABELELAND Tuskers and Chevrons all rounder Luke Jongwe was on Tuesday hospitalised in the United Arab Emirates after suffering a head injury in Zimbabwe’s 17-run T20 victory over Sharjah Cricket Club in a warm-up match.
Jongwe was hit by the ball above his right eye while attempting a return catch and was rushed by ambulance to hospital where he an x-ray revealed there was no eye damage. He also underwent a magnetic resonance imaging scan as a precautionary measure to avoid the possibility of nausea and vomiting.
Zimbabwe won the toss and elected to bat, posting a total of 185 for 6 in 20 overs. Captain Hamilton Masakadza top scored with 49 runs. Vusi Sibanda and Richmond Mutumbami knocked 35 and 30 runs respectively.
Imran Haider was the pick of the Sharjah Cricket Club bowlers, claiming a man-of-the-match winning five wickets for 21 runs off four overs. Zimbabwe will play the Sharjah Cricket Club again today at the same venue, after their itinerary was rescheduled due to the unavailability of their initial opposition, the UAE, who are playing at the ongoing Asia Cup. The Chevrons will play against West Indies on Saturday and Monday before departing for India where they will play two more warm-up games against Bangladesh on March 4 and Ireland two days later.
