Chevrons fall short in Scottish defeat

EDINBURGH. — A goose egg, bagel, doughnut, or a duck in cricket. Whatever you want to call it, Scotland had a big fat zero next to their name in the wins column for ODIs against Full Members — no wins, 23 losses since the 1999 World Cup.

That dubious record was laid to rest yesterday. Scotland didn’t get official ODI credit for laying the smackdown on Sri Lanka in a Champions Trophy warm-up last month, but the hosts came out of that match oozing confidence.

It showed against Zimbabwe when Kyle Coetzer chose to bat after winning the toss. Just as he did against Sri Lanka, Coetzer responded with a top-class century to set up a total of 317 for six in an eventual 26-run win on DLS Method in Edinburgh.

A historic win for the hosts in an entertaining game. Malcolm Waller and Sean Williams could have won the game for Zimbabwe with superb hitting, but Scotland’s batting performance gave them a platform that gave breathing room.

The second ODI will be played tomorrow. Yesterday’s match was ravaged by rain. Waller perished for 92 from 62 balls, 10 fours and five sixes, while Williams went for 70 from nine fours and one six — Cricinfo.
