THE Chevrons arrived in England yesterday ahead of their tour of Ireland where they will play a one-off Test match against Ireland next week.
The Test is set for Belfast and starts on July 25.
The Chevrons, fresh from a T20I series defeat at the hands of India, arrived at Gatwick International Airport yesterday.
Shubman Gill, who led India to a 4-1 series win over Zimbabwe, has hailed his side for their strong comeback.
Picked to lead an inexperienced squad, Gill not only showed good tactical acumen but also shone as an opening batter, top-scoring with 170 runs at a strike-rate of 126 and sending a memo to the selectors that he’s still up for it.
His performance in Harare is surely going to add a lot of weight to his T20I resume.
In fact, he presents a strong case after the retirement of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma from the format and looks favourite to couple with Yashasvi Jaiswal at the top of the order, but there are challenges he will need to stave off.
“It’s a good thing that everyone’s performing,” Gill said of the four opening batters in the squad, all of whom feature in the top-five run-getters in the series.
“It shows that everyone is hungry and nobody is ready to take it easy. For any country or board, that’s always a good thing.
“Anyone who got the opportunity grabbed it with both hands. The openers to bowlers to all-rounders to spinners, everyone made a mark and I think the selectors have now seen everything and it’s up to them to name the squad for the next series (3T20Is, 3 ODIs in Sri Lanka).”
Meanwhile, the National Premier League returns today with two fixtures pencilled in for Kwekwe and Harare.
Log leaders Gladiators take their roadshow to Kwekwe Sports Club for a date against Mbizo Cricket Club hoping to extend their unbeaten run and open a 10-point lead.
In the other match set for today, basement sides – Knights Cricket Club and Rimuka Cricket Club – lock horns at Old Hararians in the capital.
The Knights are yet to pick up points with four straight defeats to anchor the 14-team table.
Rimuka will be eyeing their second win of the season and climb up the ladder – they are on number 12 with 10 points.
