DESPITE the Cheetahs’ narrow loss to Zambia, the Mutare duo of Ngoni Chibuwe and Mutare Sports Club captain Gideon Muyambo has impressed team manager Donald Mangenje. He said he will work with them until they are fully developed. The Cheetahs participated in the two-day Windhoek Draught International Sevens tournament.
They lost in the final, 12-14, to Zambia who were hosting the tournament.
Chibuwe, who is plying his trade in South Africa, played in the Sevens side while Muyambo was in their second-string side, the Goshawks.
“We travelled with the two teams, the Cheetahs and the Goshawks. Both teams had 12 players each,” said Mangenje.
“We do not have a league locally where these guys can train so these games will go a long way in equipping our players well ahead of our Africa Cup which will also be used as the World Cup qualifiers.
“The main objective in us participating in these games was to asses players. We have done that and we now have players that we will work with all the way to the World Cup.
“We included some new faces so that we can asses them. I was impressed by the Mutare duo of Muyambo and Chibuwe.
“Muyambo is a good player. He is full of potential. He is part of our development plan. We want to work with him and develop him until he is good enough to play in the first team.
The Cheetahs will take part in the Maseru Sevens Tournament slated for September 23-24 in Lesotho.
They will travel with 12 players.
The countries that will take part include Zambia, Namibia, Botswana, Lesotho and Mauritius. The Cheetahs have been the country’s most successful rugby team.
The team needs to reach the finals of the tournament in Kampala Uganda in order to secure a ticket for the 2018 Rugby World Cup Sevens finals in San Francisco, United States. The Africa Cup will be played on October 6-7 where Uganda, Namibia, Zambia, Botswana, Seychelles, Morocco, Tunisia and Mauritius will be taking part.
