Castle Lager Premiership match at Gwanzura yesterday.
Kiglon showed great intent early in the game and were rewarded when skilful midfielder Bernard Bvumbwe opened the scoring in the 13th minute.
With the game going their way, Maxwell Takaendesa Jongwe’s men were leading 3-0 at half time after Chibwiro had weighed in with a brace in the 34th and 43rd minutes.
That seemed a comfortable lead but Kiglon were soon reminded of the old adage that it’s not over until the fat lady sings as they almost gave away the precious lead when they allowed Masvingo to come back into the game in the second half.
Kiglon’s dominance in the first 45 minutes suggested they could be going for a big win but Masvingo returned from the breather more determined and reduced the arrears in the last 11 minutes through Pevington Zimunya and substitute Rowland Makiwa.
However, Masvingo, who were coming from a big win over Dynamos last week, left it until too late and, in the end, paid dearly for underrating their opponents.
Kiglon coach Jongwe was elated by the result, which lifted them two places up from the bottom of the table although they still have a long way to go in their battle for survival.
“It was a game of two halves. But one of the positives from this match is that we managed to put away the chances that we created today and we hope to take it from there in our remaining games.
“But we almost gave it away because Masvingo were bullish in the second half and they managed to score two goals. Credit to them because they fought really hard,” said Jongwe.
Masvingo had the first crack at goal when they won a free-kick on the edge of the box but Walter Mukanga’s effort from the set piece grazed the crossbar much to the relief of goalkeeper Steven Chimusoro.
But the home team went into the driving seat when Bvumbwe received a good pass from Congolese winger Yves Ebabali and chipped over the advancing goalkeeper.
Kiglon flourished from the left flank with Ebabali creating one goal while former Eagles left back Peter Muzondo provided the two crosses for Chibwiro.
The former Lengthens and CAPS United forward doubled Kiglon’s lead when he collected a poor clearance from Patson Sinamayi and sent the ball into the bottom corner of the nets.
Chibwiro completed his brace when he out-jumped the Masvingo defenders and planted a firm header from a good cross by Muzondo.
But Masvingo got a silver lining when referee Ruzive Ruzive awarded a penalty for handball, which was converted by Zimunya in the 79th minute.
The goal seemed to have inspired the visitors who went on to create more chances but could not turn them into goals.
Makiwa who got in for striker Christopher Ganyata mid way through the second half then headed in a cross from Isaac Chapura in the 85th minute.
Masvingo coach Ralph Kawondera said they lost the game in the first half and suspected that his players had a wrong attitude towards their opponents.
“I think we gave them too much room in the first half and they managed to score.
“Our tracking was not good and maybe complacency could have crept in after that win over Dynamos.
“I have been telling these guys that Kiglon are more dangerous than Dynamos because they want to survive relegation and they also want to beat a team that beat Dynamos.
“By the time the players realised that we were losing the match we were already 3-1 down. But we played well in the second half,” said Kawondera.
