A TRIBE Called Zimbabwe has brought to life a stunning recreation of a Shona maiden’s attire from the late 1800s.

Inspired by a historic photograph, the team crafted a modern interpretation of the traditional outfit, blending ancient materials and techniques with contemporary flair.

The result is “Chiedza, the Shona Dress.”

It is made of Zimbabwean leather and cowhide, with intricate beadwork, jewelry, and ostrich eggshell ornaments.

With Tariro Zinyemba as the model, Chiedza the Shona Dress embodies the essence of Zimbabwean heritage.

The team that designed the outfit said the rich textures and tones evoke a sense of timelessness, as if the maiden has stepped out of a time machine and into the 21st century.

“A few weeks ago, we shared a photograph from the late 1800s showing young Shona speaking maidens in the 1890s wearing leather skirts with chevron patterns, beads, jewelry, and ostrich eggshell ornaments.

“We decided to recreate this iconic look in 2025 in the same way it was back then. We imagined the tones and textures of the leather, cowhide, and accessories 200 years ago.

“We asked ourselves, ‘What if one of these girls walked through a time machine and found herself in 2025?’

“Surely, these black-and-white photos don’t do justice to her beauty.

“So we got to work, recreating the Shona girls outfit as close as we could, if not exactly, to 1800.

“We loved the result. She was stunning but she was still a girl from the 1800s.”

The team reimagined the traditional outfit for the modern era, incorporating modern techniques and materials while staying true to the essence of Zimbabwean culture.

“So, we decided to take it further and we reimagined what that same outfit would look like upgraded to 2025. Same traditional materials and tones, same symbolism, but more flair demonstrating the technological and artistic evolution of Zimbabwean people between 1800 and 2025.

“The Shona girl from the late 1800s has been reborn. Dripping in melanin, gold, copper, ostrich, and cowry shells,” said the team.

The unveiling of “Chiedza the Shona Dress” has generated interest and excitement, with many praising the team’s attention to detail and commitment to authenticity.

“Many hours went into the making of the Chiedza Shona Dress… real hand painted ostrich shells and cowries, premium cowhide leather and so much more detail. It is indeed luxury tribal fashion because we are a royal people.”
