THE Commander of the Air Force of Zimbabwe (AFZ), Air Marshal Jacob Nzvede, has described the passing on of Air Commodore (Retired) Simon Brian Bere as a loss of a devoted cadre, whose life was anchored on loyal service to the nation.
Air Commodore (Rtd) Bere died on 24 April in Zambia, where he had been receiving medical treatment. He was 67.
In a statement, Air Marshal Nzvede said the AFZ and the nation at large had suffered a profound loss.
“The loss of Air Commodore (Rtd) Simon Brian Bere has left a huge gap in the history of the Air Force of Zimbabwe and the nation at large,” he said.
“He was a dedicated cadre, who rose through the ranks with distinction and unwavering commitment.”
Air Marshal Nzvede extended condolences to the Bere and Kurwaisimba families, noting that the senior officer’s contribution to both the liberation struggle and post-independence military development would remain indelible.
“My deepest condolences go to the Bere family and friends,” he said.
“The nation and the entire Air Force of Zimbabwe family has lost a gallant fighter, who dedicated his life to serving the country before and after Independence.”
Air Marshal Nzvede noted that Air Commodore (Rtd) Bere’s leadership and commitment contributed significantly to the development of the country’s air defence systems and institutional ethos.
Air Commodore (Rtd) Bere was a distinguished liberation war veteran and senior figure in the country’s post-independence military establishment.
Born on September 19, 1959, in Hurungwe, he pursued his early education at Chiroti and Matau Primary Schools before attending Ascot for his secondary education.
Driven by the call to liberate his country, he joined the armed struggle. He served in the Zanla Education Department based at the rear and was later appointed Detachment Political Commissar.
Following Independence in 1980, he returned home from Mozambique and was attested into the AFZ on July 20, 1981, as an aircraftsman. Through discipline, dedication and strategic acumen, he steadily rose through the ranks to attain the position of Air Commodore.
Throughout his military career, Air Commodore (Rtd) Bere played a pivotal role in shaping the professionalism and operational strength of the AFZ.
Air Commodore (Rtd) Bere became known for his discipline, patriotism and unwavering loyalty to the nation, qualities that earned him respect within the military and beyond.
Mourners are gathered at Plot 6, Ansdale Farm in Karoi and burial arrangements are expected to be announced in due course.
