CHIEF Chipunza of Makoni District, born Fungai Mukonyora, passed on last week on Thursday at his homestead in Headlands at the ripe age of 103.
He was the 13th Chipunza Chief and was installed on April 26, 1991.
The late traditional leader was described as a fountain of knowledge and culture.
The departed leader was buried at Zvipadze Shrine (Haerligh Ruins), where Chipunza chiefs are buried.
Makoni District Coordinator, Mr Edwin Mashindi said the demise of Chief Chipunza is not a blow to his clan only, but to the entire nation as he was a pro-development leader.
“We can confirm the passing on of Chief Chipunza. We have given the family room to mourn and bury the traditional leader according to their culture. There will be a funeral ceremony at his homestead which will be open to his subjects and the general public.
“Chief Chipunza was a marvel to work with as he was a candid person who would call a spade a spade. He believed in justice for his people. He was so determined to see development taking place in his area,” said Mr Mashindi.
Family spokesperson, Dr James Chipunza said they have lost a pillar of strength and a family unifier.
“We are saddened as a family to announce the passing on of Chief Chipunza. He died at his home due to old age. He is survived by his wife, seven children, several grand and great grand children.
“He was a family unifier who performed his duties as a chief diligently as he always emphasised on fairness.
“The funeral ceremony will be held today (Friday) at his Haerligh Farm,” said Dr Chipunza.
