Chief Chiweshe’s assailants appear in court

TEN people from Chiweshe in Mazowe allegedly humiliated Chief Chiweshe, spat on his face and threatened to assault him during a civil matter hearing at his court at Musarara Primary School.

The 10 have appeared before Bindura magistrate Mrs Ruramayi Chitumbura facing contempt of court charges. The accused are Dennis (46), Dinky (28), Edward (48), Knowledge (42), Washington (53), Factor (54), Godfrey (39) Shingirirai (39) and John Gweshe. The tenth accused is Farai Chikukwa (32).

Prosecutor Mrs Sheila Maribha told the court that on June 6, at around 11am at Musarara Primary School in Chiweshe, the chief, born Lawrence Chigariro was presiding over a civil case between Joyce Baradzi and Factor Gweshe with the other accused in attendance.

It is alleged that during the proceedings one of the accused who is on the run, Obey Mafusire stood up and challenged the proceedings.

He allegedly started shouting vulgar words insulting the chief, accusing him of being unfair.

There was a commotion and Dinky and Washington charged towards the chief.

The court heard that the chief’s aides managed to protect him from an imminent attack.

It is alleged that Dennis and Mafusire managed to manoeuver their way to the chief and spat on his face.

They went on to tilt the bench where Baradzi and Godfrey were sitting, causing them to fall on the ground.

Godfrey allegedly stood up, charged towards the chief and started complaining about the treatment.

Factor, who was allegedly furious, joined in and started blaming the chief on what had happened to his brother.

Dennis, Shingirirai and John allegedly forced the chief to ask them for forgiveness, which he did.

A report was made to the police leading to the arrest of the 10.
