Chief Dakamela of Nkayi in Matabeleland North has expressed deep sorrow over the death of celebrated comedian, actor, musician, and broadcaster Babongile Sikhonjwa, describing him as a cultural champion who played a pivotal role in promoting Bulawayo’s arts scene.
Sikhonjwa died on September 21 in Bulawayo. He was 49.
“It is with great sadness that we have learnt of the sudden passing of Babongile Sikhonjwa, a son of Bulawayo whose voice, passion, and service to our people touched many lives,” Chief Dakamela said.
“Babongile was more than a media personality. He was a champion of Bulawayo’s creative spirit, a strong voice for our artistes, and a tireless advocate for the recognition and preservation of Ndebele culture and identity. His contribution to the growth of the arts and the promotion of Matabeleland talent will remain an enduring legacy.”
Chief Dakamela added that, as a traditional leader, he mourns a man who used his platform to uplift others, give hope, and remind the community of the richness of its culture and humanity.
“Sikhonjwa’s passing leaves a great void in our creative and cultural community. On behalf of the Dakamela Trust and the communities we serve, we extend our deepest condolences to the Sikhonjwa family, his colleagues, and the many friends and artistes whose lives he inspired,” he said.
“May his soul rest in eternal peace, and may we honour his memory by continuing the work of uplifting our arts, culture, and people. Kuyahamba amadoda kusale izibongo ekucineni,” concluded Chief Dakamela.
