NKAYI-Chief Dakamela has said his thirst for development was inspired by his late father, Chief Khura Dakamela whose wish was to see Nkayi becoming an advanced district.
Chief Khura Dakamela, whose father, Bekithemba Dakamela, was chief from 1988 to 1992, ruled from 1997 to August 2002.
His position was taken over by regent chief Hleziphi Dakamela in 2007, who also passed away in 2017 before the incumbent chief took over in 2019.
In an interview with B Metro, Chief Dakamela said even though his late father may not have been able to implement his ideas, he was concerned about the condition of Nkayi’s infrastructure and wanted to see the district grow.
“Even though he was only Chief for a short period, my father, Chief Khura Dakamela, had a clear idea of his goals and objectives. Even if you try to read the article that was published about him following his funeral, it is evident that the late Chief was actively working to ensure that everyone in Nkayi had access to clean water. Indeed, he may not have implemented it, but he was promoting the provision of a good road and clean water supplies for Nkayi.
“We are taking over that button because he died concerned about all of these things, which indicates that he had a development oriented mind. As a result, we are both directly and indirectly influenced by our predecessors,” he said.
The chief said, just like his late father, he was also worried about Nkayi’s status.
Chief Dakamela further assured to continue on the footsteps of the late Chief, adding that his mouth will continue uttering words of development.
After assuming office at the age of 24, Chief Dakamela started several development projects. His first initiative was the Isiphala Senkosi which was revitalized in 2020, followed by Imiklomelo kaDakamela awards ceremony which began in 2021. It started as an appreciative award event but was branded as Imiklomelo KaDakamela in 2022. Other projects include the Dakamela Housing Project (DHP) which began in 2022 although launched in April 2023, the Dakamela Education Foundation Scholarship (DEFS), and the revitalization of Isibaya Senkosi in 2023.
