Local Government, Public Works and National Housing Minister Ignatius Chombo has urged rural communities to support traditional leaders in areas they live for their development to be achieved. Minister Chombo was speaking at the burial of paramount Chief Gutu, Mr Anos Kasirayi Masanganise in Gutu on Sunday. Chief Gutu (87) died last week after a short illness.
The minister said Government prioritised the provision of clean water and sanitation with an improved transport network in rural areas but said the illegal sanctions imposed by the West on Zimbabwe were stifling progress.
He said the Zanu-PF Government would continue to work tirelessly in conjunction with traditional leaders to engender socio-economic development in rural areas where the majority of Zimbabweans live.
“I have no doubt that people in rural areas across the country will continue to render unwavering support to their traditional leaders so that their development needs are promoted and realised. Government is committed to improving service delivery in rural areas with respect to availability of safe drinking water and sanitation, access to education and health for all as well as the transport network among other priorities,’’ he said.
The late chief was the 21st substantive paramount Chief Gutu of the Gumbo totem who was a direct descendant of one Mabwazhe who is believed to have migrated in the 19th century from the Musana area in Mashonaland Central to occupy the area now known as Gutu.
Chief Gutu was installed four years ago on June 26, 2009 and lost his wife last year. He is survived by four children, more than 19 grandchildren,and at two great grand children.
