Chief Makoni set to be installed

THE process to install the substantive Chief Makoni has gathered momentum, with reports indicating that a candidate to be ‘‘anointed’’ the new heir apparent has been duly nominated.
The Manica Post has it on good authority that war veteran and historian Mr Colgan Gwasira (54) of the Zendera family will soon be taking over the reins from Mr Mark Nyahada, who has been acting since the death of Naboth Gandanzara on September 6 2008 at Mutare Provincial Hospital.

The Makoni chieftainship rotates in four houses, namely Muswati, Zendera, Nyamanhindi and Nyakurukwa and the chief-elect comes from the Zendera family.

Sources who attended a meeting by the four rotating houses last Friday said Gwasira was unveiled by the Minister of Presidential Affairs, Cde Didymus Mutasa to officials in the Ministry of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing as incoming Chief Makoni.

Recommendations for the installation of Mr Gwasira, a versatile educationist, who was recently involved in a car accident and spent nearly two weeks in hospital, have since been made.

However, a splinter group from the Nyakurukwa family led by Mr Donald Sarudzai Kamba Makoni, who is also eyeing the throne, is opposed to Mr Gwasira’s candidature.

Mr Kamba Makoni claimed that he was chosen as the new Mambo Makoni on May 29 2010 and was subsequently installed on December 11, 2010 at a traditional installation ceremony conducted by the fire-kindler and installer of the Makoni chieftainship, Mr James Kwaramba Mukuwapasi.

He argued that Government installation had taken time because of politicking and abuse of power by some family members.
