Manicaland traditional leader Chief James Kurauone Mutasa has been elected as a Senator for Manicaland to replace Chief Makumbe who died in November last year, while the CCC nominated Mr Kudakwashe Matibiri to become Senator, replacing Mr Murisi Zwizwai who died in June this year.
Another traditional leader in Manicaland, Chief Chikukwa (known as Walter Chikukwa), was elected to become a member of the National Council of Chiefs representing the province.
The nomination of Mr Matibiri for the Senate post was announced by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission chairperson, Justice Priscilla Chigumba in a gazetted notice published last Friday.
The CCC had selected Senator Zwizwai on its party list in last year’s elections and has the right to nominate his successor.
Justice Chigumba also notified of a vacancy in the Senate following the death of Senator Keresencia Chabuka from CCC in July this year, so the opposition party will nominate her replacement, while the election of Chiefs Mutasa and Chikukwa was announced by ZEC chief elections officer, Mr Utloile Silaigwa.
In her notice about the nomination of Mr Matibiri, Justice Chigumba said those with any objections should do so in writing.
On the election of Chief Mutasa, Mr Silaigwana said his election took effect from July 24 2024. He said Chief Chikukwa also was elected to be a member of the National Council of Chiefs.
