Chiefs, Chicken Inn seek revival

THE Castle Lager Premier Soccer League returns this weekend with Bulawayo’s top-flight representatives facing another stern examination as Bulawayo Chiefs and Chicken Inn look to arrest contrasting, yet equally worrying, trends that have defined their campaigns.

For a city yearning to re-assert itself on the domestic football map, every fixture has become more than just a battle for three points; it is another opportunity to restore pride.

Bulawayo Chiefs will draw confidence from an encouraging goalless draw away to Dynamos at Rufaro, where they produced one of their most disciplined displays of the season. Although the result extended their wait for a victory, the Ninjas showed resilience, tactical organisation and defensive maturity against one of the country’s traditional giants.

Coach John Nyikadzino’s charges now face an equally demanding assignment at home against MWOS, a side smarting from a disappointing result of their own and expected to arrive in Bulawayo determined to bounce back.

Bulawayo Chiefs know that while a point at Dynamos was respectable, only a victory this weekend will give real value to that hard-earned draw. Another positive result could also provide the momentum they desperately need as they seek to climb away from the danger zone.

Across the city, the mood at Chicken Inn is markedly different.

The Gamecocks endured a frustrating return to Luveve Stadium last weekend, suffering a disappointing 2-0 defeat in what had been billed as an emotional return home.

Supporters had hoped that returning to their traditional home, Luveve, would ignite a turnaround in fortunes, but instead they left disappointed after another blunt attacking display.

That defeat only heightened concerns over Chicken Inn’s inconsistency this season, with the former league champions struggling to reproduce the intensity and clinical finishing that once made them one of the Premiership’s most feared outfits.

Their task does not get any easier this weekend as they will travel to Mhondoro to face a Ngezi Platinum Stars who are boasting one of the league’s strongest squads and genuine championship ambitions. Well organised, physically imposing and dangerous in transition, the platinum miners will present another huge examination for a Chicken Inn side desperate to rediscover both confidence and consistency.

For coach Tonderayi Ndiraya, the challenge is not only tactical but psychological. His players must quickly recover from last week’s setback and prove that the Luveve defeat was merely a stumble rather than the beginning of another difficult spell.

“So we’ve gone for four matches without a defeat and against Hardrock we think we dropped and dropped and dropped again. So it’s really very, very frustrating. The inconsistency in terms of getting results is very frustrating. But we’ve seen some good signs. Good signs. We’ve gone for about six matches without scoring. We’re back again to firing blanks. That’s also very worrying. So it’s something that we have to sit down and talk about,” said Ndiraya ahead of their game against Ngezi Platinum Stars. With the league entering a decisive phase, both Bulawayo clubs understand the significance of the weekend’s fixtures.

Chiefs have an opportunity to build on the belief generated by their spirited draw against Dynamos, while Chicken Inn are under pressure to respond after an underwhelming homecoming. For Bulawayo football, the stakes extend beyond league points. The city has watched its clubs struggle to match the standards they once set in Zimbabwean football.

This weekend presents another chance to show that the fight to restore Bulawayo’s status is far from over. Whether it ends in celebration or further frustration will depend on who can rise to the occasion when the whistle blows.
