Chiefs have called for peace as the country heads for harmonised elections, with Senator Chief Makumbe saying this should be done from household to national level.
He was addressing members of the Harare Rotary Club on peace building yesterday.
Chief Makumbe, who is the leader of the Provincial Assembly of Chiefs in Manicaland, said: “As leaders of communities peace begins with us and we have realised that resources must be shared equally among our people in order for us to promote peace. When there is no peace there is no value.
“We should preach the gospel of peace always and we must teach ourselves to talk or respond in a manner that promotes peace for nation building.”
Chief Makumbe urged people to desist from adultery as it disturbed peace in communities.
He encouraged people to work hard to achieve better livelihoods to promote peace.
Speaking at the same event, Mrs Viginia Mudimu, who is a member of the Harare Rotary Club, said women were victims of violence in most cases and was looking forward to women getting protection during the elections.
“Women voices should be heard despite the fact that women do not participate equally with men in various sectors of life,” she said. “Women’s participation must be encouraged.”
Another rotarian, Mrs Letisha Chingama, said the information of peace building preached in churches and at political rallies should be put into practice for the nation to achieve peace.
