Chiefs players to share gate takings

BULAWAYO Chiefs players are reportedly set to share gate proceeds from last Saturday’s home game against Dynamos at Barbourfields Stadium.

Prior to the match, Amakhosi Amahle players boycotted training for two days in a bid to force the club’s leadership to pay them what they are owed.  

Some of the team’s players, who requested anonymity, said they were on Tuesday given US$100 each with US$50 being part of their May salaries. 

The remainder was reportedly a draw bonus amount they were given for holding Chicken Inn to a one-all draw on September 9 in a match played at Luveve Stadium.

Impeccable sources within the club’s corridors said when it all looked like the players were really determined not to fulfil the Dynamos fixture, on the eve of the match, Bulawayo Chiefs leadership quickly called the players for a meeting at the club’s village where it was agreed that they were going to share the DeMbare match gate takings.

Outspoken Bulawayo Chiefs head coach Johanisi Nhumwa confirmed that his charges were promised monetary incentives that will be paid today.

“It was not difficult to motivate the boys ahead of the Dynamos game because on the eve of the match, they were promised money by the club’s sponsor who even mentioned figures. Their winning bonuses were upped to US$200, so they were really motivated.

“The players were also told that they are going to share the gate takings that were realised which is very good. We are just patiently waiting for Monday (today) and we are looking forward to seeing the club playing its part,” said Nhumwa.

Bulawayo Chiefs beat Dynamos 2-1.

Chiefs’ victory capped their season’s dominance over DeMbare, having won the first round 3-2 in Harare.

Chiefs’ captain Malvin Mkolo opened the scoring in the 47th minute. 

Dynamos replied through Dominic Mudadi three minutes later.

Free scoring and forceful Obriel Chirinda found Chiefs’ second and winner.

Chiefs players and coaches have in the past taken the club to court for their share of the US$70 000 prizemoney earned when the club clinched the 2022 Chibuku Super Cup.
