Chigubu to stand up against Harare’s finest at Hifa

Showbiz Reporter
STAND-UP comedian Clive Chigubu has earned himself a spot at the week-long Harare International Festival of the arts (Hifa) which will kick off on April 29 and ends on May 4. Chigubu will be joined by Harare’s leading comedians Comrade Fatso and stand-up comedy veteran Michael Kudakwashe at the Hifa stand-up comedy show named Seventy Five Percent. The show will be held at Reps Theatre on April 30, May 1 and May 3.

Comedians Carl Joshua Ncube, Tats Nkonzo (South Africa), Daliso Chaponda (Malawi), David Kibuuka (Uganda), and Ben Voss (South Africa) will also perform at different venues during Hifa.

Daring to go where no one else dares to go – mainly because they are stupid, the cast of Seventy Five Percent will attack everything from social and political taboos to the more important things like potholes and beer. Last year, the stand-up comedians held a two-day show at Hifs dubbed Fifty One Percent.
The show was so successful that they were given an extra day.

Spoken word poets Umncantsaha from Matabeleland South will feature at the Hifa Spoken Word programme at Hivos Poetry Café on May 1. Hifa will also run daily fashion shows which will see Bulawayo fashion designers showcasing their fashion sense to the world at Hifa.

Multiple Nama award winner Jah Prayzah will return to Hifa this year bringing his rich vocal lines complemented by deeply felt lyrics.
Other local acts who will perform at the festival include Diana Samkange, Prince Musarurwa, Cynthia Mare, Were Band, Three Generations Band, Killer T, Dadza D, Ricky Fire, Lady Squanda, DJ Naida, Bongo Love, Take Fizzo, Jnr Bantan, DJ Rax, and Tumbuka Dance Company among others.

Toya Delazy, one of the biggest names in South African music, will also jet into the country for a performance at the festival on May 3 — Coca-Cola Day. Delazy, who is both a singer and a pianist, will be accompanied by her phenomenal band. Delazy, who is popular for her hit-track Pump it on, will come to Hifa having just been nominated for her poignant smash hit Memoriam.

South Africa’s Freshly Ground will close the Hifa activities on May 4 with a performance on the Telecel Main Stage. Popular for their hit-track Doo bee do, their music, a fusion of rock, jazz and Afro-pop, is a favourite among all audiences — from young children to their grandparents.

International acts who will grace the festival include DJ Milkshake (South Africa), Black bazar (Congo), Acada Canto (Spain), Helga Davis (New York) Tcheka (Cape Verde), John Wither (South Africa), Steven Prutsman (America), Jo Lawry (New York-based), Queen Mashie (Kenya), and Dutch band Chef’s Special.
