ZIMBABWE Under 19 head coach Elton Chigumbura believes the fine margins will decide their fate and he wants his team walking into the ICC Under 19 World Cup feeling ready for anything.
With Zimbabwe set to co-host the global showpiece alongside Namibia, Chigumbura says the groundwork has been deliberate, detailed and relentless as he shapes a side he trusts in every department of the game.
The coach has already named his final squad and attention has now shifted to sharpening a competitive unit capable of standing up to the best young cricketers in the world.
Preparation has included a busy programme of friendly matches designed to test combinations and build match awareness ahead of the tournament.
Zimbabwe are set to feature in a tri-series against Pakistan and Afghanistan from December 25 to January 6 next year, as part of their final run-in.
The ICC Under 19 World Cup will run from January 15 to February 6.
“The Zimbabwe Under 19 team has completed a focused and structured preparation phase aimed at building a disciplined, competitive, and tactically aware squad ahead of upcoming matches,” said Chigumbura.
“The program has emphasised clear role definition, with each player understanding their responsibilities in batting, bowling, and fielding.
“Training sessions have been carefully planned to balance technical skills, physical conditioning, and mental readiness, ensuring players are prepared for match situations.”
Chigumbura wants his batting unit, especially at the top of the order, to set the tone in the 50 over format by laying strong foundations.
“Batting preparation has focused on strong foundations at the top of the order, stability through the middle, and smart finishing under pressure.
“Bowlers have worked on consistency, control, and clear plans to different batter types, while fielding standards and team energy have been treated as non-negotiable areas of performance,” said Chigumbura.
Beyond skills and fitness, the technical team has also placed heavy emphasis on understanding the opposition as a way of settling nerves and boosting belief within the camp.
Chigumbura says no detail has been ignored as the countdown to the World Cup continues.
“Detailed opposition analysis has also played a key role, allowing players to approach matches with clarity and confidence rather than reacting under pressure,” he said.
