“It is sad to note that public transport drivers are flouting traffic regulations through speeding, disobeying traffic signals, picking passengers at undesignated points and overloading, among others,” he said.
Comm-Gen Chihuri appealed to the public to join the police in ensuring road safety.
“As we travel let us play the role of traffic police officers to guarantee safety and orderliness on our roads,” he said.
He commended Harare traffic police officers for working tirelessly to reduce traffic congestion and road carnage. Comm-Gen Chihuri said they had deliberately ensured that during peak hours, police officers were deployed at intersections and undesignated pick up points to control traffic. This, he said, had gone a long way in reducing congestion in the CBD and road accidents.
“Let me therefore, strongly warn commuter omnibus drivers that they are not above the law, hence police will not relent in enforcing traffic regulations,” Comm-Gen Chihuri said.
He urged officers to uphold the virtues of morality by shunning corruption.
“The uniform gives you power to speak with authority, use it wisely and for the good of the people whom you have sworn an oath to protect and serve,” Comm-Gen Chihuri said.
